How to deal with criticism

What happens when your quest for validation leads to harsh criticism?
Sometimes you go looking for reassurance, only to be completely torn down and end up feeling even worse. The last thing you want is to feel defeated and like you want to quit, when you were already doubting yourself to begin with.
